Honey, That’s a Hateful Lover - Album

Project Type: Concept, personal project

Challenge: Create a visual atmosphere for a concept album that blends the fun yet serious hurt of following in and out of love with someone.

Concept: An album exploring the toxic relationship between a wife and husband as they remain together from young adulthood until their breaking point in their late thirties. This is a pop album with R&B influences

Direction Choices: What does a loveless marriage look like? What does a hurtful marriage look like? What does a passionless marriage look like? What does the slow death of a marriage do to a household and a person? With this in mind, I ended up breaking down the concept of a relationship into phases, with the beginning euphoric phase being my main focus for the visuals. It's this weird, ultra-bright universe you create in your head and try to replicate in real life, where you ignore all the red flags to live in this self-constructed utopia. Eventually, the time comes to leave that utopia, and this album grapples with the fallout of re-entering a bleak reality. I loved the idea of contrasting the bright, misleading cover with the actual contents of the album. Moreover, the phrase “Honey, that’s a hateful lover” carries a kind of light-heartedness in fear of scaring you by just straight-up saying that “you married the devil” that I find matches the candy-sweet cover. It's breaking the news to you easy.
