Challenge: Create a thoughtful, yet intriguing visual world for a film concept’s campaign with the added challenge of adding none of the cast’s faces to the visuals.
Concept: What does a modern-day computer club look like? Do they still exist? What happens at a computer club? How would participating in one shape a new generation? Computer Club is a film that explores a group of college students as they create a new iteration of the campus’ 2009 computer club.
Direction Choices: No real faces. That was the starting point and the central challenge. I find that a lot of film posters have a central theme of having the actors’ faces on the poster. I get why, often times, the cast can sell the film, and for a lot of audiences, they will remember to see a film based on the cast alone with the posters serving as a digital and physical reminder. I wanted to challenge or play around with the idea of having a series of visuals and posters with no actor faces. So with no faces, I need to decide what direction to make the visuals. I settled on humanoid rough sketches. There was something interesting and telling about using something as human as one’s paper sketches for a film about the impact of too much of the internet creeping into all aspects of our lives. Sketches are vague outlines of humans with no distinct contrast, which highlights the flattening that online personas can cause to one’s life and personality. The Internet is noise to everything in life, and I wanted to create that noise with the different textures, layering, and adding coding text.
Rollout: If you want to know more, I’m free for an interview.
