Challenge: Create a universe for a book concept that encapsulates the world of suburban Gen Z as they try to find meaning in their lives and more adventure after the consequences of a global pandemic.
Concept: Follows the journey of a 25 year-old as she grapples with regret from lost opportunities in her early adulthood. She explores and learns to accept her version of adulthood and deal with her feelings of regret for what she has lost.
Direction Choices: When it comes to the world of Six Springs, I envisioned a certain bleakness that feels somewhat unique to today's young adults. A bleakness created by social isolation and computerization. It’s universe that lures you in with its interesting elements and escapism. Based on that vision, I settled on a new interpretation of suburbia. The main goal was to create a visual world and identity that felt fresh and weird. As the book deals with some of the struggles that young adults face today as they live at home longer than intended, I wanted to capture that feeling of being out of place in a world that wasn’t really made for you. I mean, I think we all can admit that the suburbs weren’t exactly created for depressed, unmarried 20-year-olds who want to explore new things and meet new people.
Rollout: In our interview, I can expand upon this more.
